Glynn County’s Airport Expands – Creates 150 Jobs

Brunswick Golden Isles AirportGlynn County Commissioners voted to make significant investments into the Brunswick – Golden Isles Airport. The expansion will be a huge benefit to the local economy and has already spurred expansions from existing industries and job creation.  Glynn County is investing $8.5 million for the first phase of the project which has already spurred 150 new jobs for the area.

The Brunswick – Golden Isles Airport boasts an 8,000 foot runway that was originally used by the U.S. Navy to launch blimps that would search for German U-Boats during World War II.
New Ramp Space will be added to the Airport to accommodate the explosive growth in the Aerospace Industry that’s taking place in Glynn County and all across Georgia.

The Expansion

By expanding the ramp space at the Airport, there will be much more room for companies such as Gulfstream and Stambaugh Aviation – both of which are expanding.

The goal of the expansion is to take a step back and look at the big picture. In the past, general aviation and industry/MROs were placed wherever they would fit. By increasing the available ramp space, long range plans can be put into place that better accommodate all airport users and future growth.

World Class General Aviation Area

New ramp space is like a fresh slate in which to create an area that is dedicated entirely to General Aviation and has all the amenities a pilot could want.

The first phase of the expansion (highlighted in red) will accommodate several new hangars and there’s plenty of opportunity for further growth.

Aerospace Industrial Area

North Airport Ramp Expansion Glynn CountyNearly 2,000 acres, much of which is completely undeveloped, surrounds the airport. Obviously, Glynn County can accommodate a significant amount of additional development. However, adding ramp space comes first.

The first phase (highlighted in red) will allow Stambaugh Aviation to expand significantly and accommodate more and larger aircraft.  Stambaugh Aviation expects to hire an additional 100 employees to handle the increased work load.  Stambaugh Aviation has also worked with one of their suppliers who will be locating in Glynn County as a result of the expansion which will bring another 50 jobs in the aerospace sector.

A typical aerospace/aviation company can afford to build a hangar but taxiways and ramp space leading to the hangar is another story. As such, available ramp space can be very hard to find. The current expansion will accommodate a significant increase in ramp space that is available for more development.

Glynn County’s Economic Development Hub

Glynn County’s greatest asset for economic development is the Brunswick – Golden Isles Airport. There are several other assets and factors that drive economic growth and development, such as the Port of Brunswick, I95, Tourism, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, etc.

Technical Education Hub – The new Coastal Pines Technical College Campus (opening Fall 2015) and the Golden Isles Career Academy are located directly across the street.

Renewable Energy – Towards the end of the runway, there will be an 80 acre Solar Farm that will provide clean renewable energy for businesses located around the airport.

Perfect Location – For aerospace companies that don’t need access to the runway, the airport is surrounded by prime industrial parks; including Brunswick – McBride Industrial Park, North Glynn Commerce Park, and Eastgate Commerce Park.

New Heights for the Aerospace Industry

Glynn County has stepped up in a big way, they’re investing in themselves. The aerospace industry already provides hundreds of high-quality; high-paying jobs in Glynn County and the expansion will take the aerospace industry sector to the next level.

The expansion will enable Glynn County to support new aerospace companies and provide existing companies with what they need to grow and expand in the Golden Isles.
